Choose the reference features

The drawing should make clear which part features establish the mark location. A fixture that is convenient to load may use a different reference from the one controlled by engineering. Resolve that difference during setup review. If orientation is important, identify how the operator can distinguish the correct loading position from a reversed or rotated one.

Plan for actual part variation

Production parts may vary within their drawing limits. A fixture should be reviewed against that allowed variation, not only against one unusually convenient sample. Tell the supplier about features likely to affect seating or clamping. If protective material is used between the part and fixture, include its effect on positioning in the review.

Connect setup to inspection

A first-piece check confirms the result of the complete setup. Define how the mark location, orientation and appearance will be assessed, and which checks continue during the batch. For repeat orders, retain the fixture identification or setup reference with the artwork. If the part geometry changes, confirm whether the existing fixture is still appropriate before restarting production.
