Use the category as a starting point
UV describes the ultraviolet source used by the system. Manufacturer guidance associates it with applications on selected plastics and other materials. That is not a guarantee that a particular molded part will mark without an unwanted change. Exact formulation, geometry and appearance requirements remain part of the application review.
Test the product configuration
A small symbol may need enough contrast and area for the intended reader. A cosmetic housing may instead need a consistent logo appearance. Define which outcome matters before selecting a sample. Use the actual resin, finish and color, and include any processing that follows marking. Keep the accepted sample tied to that configuration.
Do not buy by wavelength alone
Ask what the proposed system and service include: positioning, workholding, inspection and data handling. Compare suppliers against the same finished-part requirement. If a drawing specifies a source or process, obtain confirmation rather than assuming that any laser can substitute.
