Variable-data marking applies a unique identifier to each part from an agreed sequence or supplied data file.

Human-readable text can accompany barcodes or Data Matrix symbols. Symbol size and readability depend on the available area, surface and reader.

Numbering control starts before marking: define the first and last identifiers, exclusions, duplicate handling and how rejected parts are recorded.

Contrast, texture and curvature influence code readability. A visually clear symbol is not automatically a verified symbol.

Small marking areas require a review of data length, symbol density, quiet zone and reader setup.

If the component is cleaned, coated or assembled after marking, include those steps when evaluating the final code location and condition.
