Find the material record
Start with the drawing, purchasing record or supplier certificate. Ask the component supplier about coatings, fillers and surface treatments that may not be obvious. A trade name may need to be traced to an exact grade. Keep the information attached to the inquiry so it reaches the person selecting the process, not just the purchasing contact.
Do not use trial marking as identification
A visible mark does not establish that the process is appropriate for the material, its emissions or the part’s performance requirements. Have the supplier assess material compatibility and applicable operating controls before any trial. If documentation cannot be obtained, discuss a suitable identification method or an alternative marking approach with qualified personnel.
Keep the uncertainty explicit
A request should say what is known and what remains unconfirmed. For example, “black molded housing, supplier grade pending” is more useful than an unsupported claim that it is a particular polymer. Do not release production on an assumption that later becomes difficult to trace. When identification is resolved, update the approved order record and use that designation on reorders.
